Q: What’s the value proposition of Winter Tires?
A: J. Hugo Dyson
Here’s my theory:
- With snow tires, your winter driving experience would be significantly better
- The net output for tires would be the same over time, your all season tires would last longer
- The main extra cost would be the swapping of the tires
Q: Why don’t we generally use them then?
Answer: B. Warren Lewis
My personal and situational rebuttal:
- We barely drive anyways and much less so in winter
- Sometimes we escape south for a few weeks (hoping to soon) and I wouldn’t want to have to swap early
- I find alignments and regularly tire care challenging enough without having to schedule or store for a switch
- If i do need a vehicle to do great in the snow, I drive the 4×4 and it is a beast even with normal tires

Yeah I researched this in depth last year and came to the same conclusion. Not worth it. Not only is there the swapping of the tires, there is also the added cycling of tire lifecycles in general. And I think there actually would be a lot of extra cost in the tires too. Winter tires don’t last as long. And then the storage of the tires. And the mental effort involved every year in trying to optimize when you switch the tires based on weather forecasts …. this is NOT a task suited for an INTP lol
